Post Mortem Reaction...
Posted On: 10/15/2007 11:30:19

So, I'm writing this blog a day later than I wanted to, but just couldn't bring myself to do it yesterday...

I turned on the game on Saturday, expecting to see fire out of this team.  Was I expecting a win?  No.  But I expected effort.  I expected passion from the players.  I DID NOT expect the total collapse that took place!  I didn't watch the game... I listened to it on the radio...  Correction, I listened to it on the radio until midway through the 2nd quarter, when it became painfully apparent exactly what our (I use "our" loosely, because this sure doesn't feel like the husker team I grew up watching) team and program has been reduced to.  Make no mistake about it, Oklahoma State is not a good team.  Any of the powers of the Big 12 would reduce them to rubble much the way they did to us.  So, they ended up putting 45 points on us.  They could have easily put 60 on us if they keep the foot on the gas.  I have much respect for Mike Gundy after this weekend.  He saw the truth of where we are, and layed off.  Gary Pinkel would have put 60 on us just to do it if he had the chance.

So where does this leave us?  After the 2nd quarter of the game yesterday, and I had turned the radio off, it left me doing chores I should have accomplished some time ago.  Fixed the clothes dryer ($60 bucks down the drain, damned heating elements), and before it started raining again, spent alittle time doing yard work...  To me, nothing cleanses the soul more than spending time feeling like you are accomplishing something.  Heck, I even spent some time with the ol'e ball and chain...  She has such a simpler view of what is happening.  Her opinion: "Its just not their year."  I wish I could look at like that.  Yet, this has been nagging in the back of my mind since even before Saturday, but have not said it out loud until right now.  I miss the old days of Husker football.  I hate it that we feel like a pro team going through piss poor season.  Guess what guys, we aren't getting the #1 draft pick for losing out!  What I wouldn't give for Tom Osborne to be back in our program in any capacity.  I wish Turner Gill was still here.  He has the perineal doormat Buffalo at 3-1 with the MAC division.  Wonder what he could do coaching here?

Last night, the rumors started to fly on Rivals... The site set a record for most users logged on at once last night, a Sunday night, when most people should be getting ready for bed, at 11pm!!!  Apathy is indeed not here.  First it started with a major press conference today.  It mutated until it was out of control.  Everyone was going to be fired, everyone had their "source".  If there was ever such a thing as an online lynch mob, it was reaching those proportions!  Normally reliable sources were saying things they probably regret today...  I still think there are going to be changes, I have a feeling they will not come until the season is over though.  While it was out of control, it was nice to see our fan base still being passionate about the team.

We head into what will be the darkest week in modern Husker history... The media will take their shots with just cause at our coaching staff.  I just hope that the media, and to a larger extent our fan base will take it easy on the kids.  In all reality, they are at this point, simply pawns in a bigger power struggle.  I wish they would show more effort on the field, but if you don't believe in what your being taught and told to do, it is hard to do it with emotion.  I will still support our team... I know no other way.  I hope they win this weekend against Texas A&M.  If not, our program will sink further into depths we've never had to deal with in recent history.

EDIT: This just in from the Lincoln Journal Star website.

Just put a call into Harvery Perlman's office.

When the UNL Chancellor was requested for an interview, his secretary said: "He's not preparing himself to talk just yet on the situation. We are working on it. There will be some form of communication coming from our office later on."

Would that be today?

"Not certain," she said.
