Coach Callahan Has Been Fired! This morning Tom Osborne announced Bill Callahan has been fired and that the rest of the coaching staff will be paid to the end of their contracts which is 13 months. If they are retained under the new headcoach then they will work the remainder of their contracts but if they are not then they will be paid their remainder of their contracts. If they get a job someplace else then their pay ends. What do you think? Should Callahan been given more time? Who do you want as the next Nebraska Head coach? Bo Pelini? Turner Gill? Maybe Gary Patterson? Who do you think should lead NU?

A little more info" The contracts for Nebraska’s assistant coaches are tied directly to the head coach and automatically ended when Callahan’s contract ended.
Nebraska’s assistant coaches include: Bill Busch, safeties and special teams coordinator; Kevin Cosgrove, defensive coordinator and linebackers; Phil Elmassian, cornerbacks; Ted Gilmore, receivers and recruiting coordinator; Randy Jordan, running backs; Joe Rudolph, tight ends; Dennis Wagner, offensive line; Shawn Watson, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks; and Buddy Wyatt, defensive line.
“Coaches who would like to be considered for employment on the next staff will stay on and recruit,” Osborne said. “Regardless of their decision, we will honor all terms of their current contracts. We will also honor all terms of Coach Callahan’s contract.”

Who didn't see that coming? He was a marked man before TO came into the AD position.
I do wish our fan base would calm down and back off though. We look like a bunch of idiots to the rest of the world. ESPN did a segment on the Husker Nation and pretty much made fun of the State. The truth is compelling.

You know, I'm not from this state so I don't have the ties to the Huskers that a resident would have. Regardless of that fact, the last year has made Huskers fans look terrible. I know as well as anyone that not all fans have been asking for the coaches dismissal, or have decided to make death threats to the defensive coordinator, but many have been very vocal and very angry because of the teams performance. I'll say that I'm an Illini fan, so we're happy most years with a .500 record, so we're used to rooting for our team during bad years. I still can't help but think of the negative impact the fans have had on the program this year though. If I'm a player, what motivation do I have to play for fans that are angry enough about my teams performance that they threaten the life of my defensive coordinator? It's bad enough, playing on the field and losing, but then to read blogs and postings from upset fans denouncing the team and their performance, how much worse does that make me feel. I know they're playing football at a college level, but they're still not old enough to legally drink. Yet the feedback that is seen everywhere is how fed up the fans are with the coach, with how bad the defense is, how incapable the offense is and so on. A new coach next year isn't going to make them magically bowl eligible. With some of the recruits backing out, some of the talent at the skill positions leaving, the championship teams of the mid-90's this isn't.
I really do hope for the best. Nebraska really does love their Huskers. I just hope they give the players a reason to play for their fans.
