Okay here is my rant and rave as to how to fix the Huskers!
1) Get rid of the 3-3-5 defense!!!! You are automatically giving other teams a head start on the play with a soft cushioned front of only 3 guys against 5 OLs. That leaves 5 guys in zone defense wondering who they should be covering. Nebraska runs the 3-3-5 defense to defend against the "spread offense" which is stupid. First of all MAKE THEM ADJUST TO YOUR GAME. If you run a 3-4-4 or 4-3-4 defense they will have to make one of their WRs come in to guard against the rush. Actually it would more than likely be a TE. A TE is usually someone a LB can pick up and defend against better. Don't play to their game...make them play to yours. In order of best defenses. 3-4-4 or 4-3-4 then 5-2-4. 3-3-5 is the worst defensive scheme. Esp when you mix in zone. It should be man-to-man on the WRs. Zone on a 3-3-5 leaves too much room for error and a good QB (like Daniels) only needs a quick opening to find a receiver. 3 guys up front against 5 OLs is NOT going to get any pressure on the QB. No pressure means the QB is going to pick the defense a part. Not to mention the RB having little resistance on a run. NU rans the 3-4 and 4-3 last year. Why change something that isn't broke?
2) I like the west coast offense at Nebraska but it isn't the one I remember Bill Walsh (the Architect) created in San Francisco. I remember RB Roger Craig AND FB Tom Rathman (Yes, a Fullback) tearing it up. Rathman made on heck of a lead blocker when Craig carried the ball. Take out the 3 TEs set and have just one (in general) and bring back the FB and split out an extra WR (playmaker). I know Castille wants to be a RB (and he is good at it) but imagine him blasting holes for Marlon Lucky and bulling over defensive LBs with the ball in hand. Get them both on the field at the same time. Thunder and Lighting.
3) Simplify the playbook. Not enough time to learn it in practice at the college level and nobody needs 200+ plays in a playbook. You need about 40 base plays and a handful of gimic plays. Also the terminolgy is too much and frankly stupid.
4) Basics. Learn how to tackle. Coaches can't take all of the blame unless they forgot to teach basic tackling techniques. Arm tackling is going to make you look stupid. Lay in a shoulder. That is what the pads are for.
5) Learn how to adjust play calling. Learn when to quit throwing or running. Ideally you want a 50/50 passing/running game but sometimes you have to adjust to 30/70 or 70/30 or 90/10 or whatever. Continuously runnning the ball up the middle and getting 1 or 2 yards regularly might be a good sign to THROW the ball. Case in point against USC. Should have been 90% passing. Instead it was stuck on 50/50.
6) TE shifting. Why do we need to shift three TEs? Get set and Play! This only delays game procedure when players should concentrate on the active play. Go back to the 1 man in motion if you want to throw a defense a little off. Just because you can shift people before they set doesn't mean you have to do it.
That is my rant for the year. If they can't change...someone has to go.
